News September 2009 The SCUBAnauts Tampa Bay chapter has been awarded a US Environmental Protection Agency Gulf Guardian Award in Education. The award is for a project completed in the Gulf of Mexico, where the students acquired data for Dr. Jennifer Dupont’s doctoral dissertation. The project studied mitigation sites placed in sixty feet of water by Gulfstream Natural Gas Systems. The award will be presented at the Oceans ’09 Conference in Biloxi, MS on 29 October. The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation invited students from the SCUBAnauts International Tampa Bay area chapters to their 7th annual leadership awards dinner held June 9, 2009 in Washington, D.C. The SCUBAnauts organization was recognized for it collective volunteer marine conservation and outreach efforts. While in Washington, students discussed their work with Congressman Gene Taylor of Mississippi. They also spoke with Dr. Robert Ballard (National Geographic Explorer in Residence), the scientist who discovered the Titanic, as well as other marine conservation and science experts. Students learned about current marine research and ocean conservation issues by participating in Capitol Hill Ocean Week scientific seminars. February 2009 SCUBAnauts win third place at the National Ocean Science Bowl regional competition (Spoonbill Bowl). Tampa Bay Chapter SCUBAnauts Sean Deeb and Nick Johnson partnered with two SCUBAnauts from the Tarpon Springs Chapter to make all of us proud. In only their second year in the competition, they placed third among sixteen teams. January 2009 SCUBAnaut Gage Flory and friend Jacob Sprenzea placed Second in Physics at the 2009 Pinellas County Regional Science Fair. Using the SCUBAnaut’s Ocean Optics Jaz spectrometer in an underwater housing, they measured visible color wavelengths at different depths. |
